The Strategic Opportunity Cube™- A Patent Mapping Tool
Whats a Patent Map good for?
Companies that have portfolios of patents to manage are often not sure of what coverage they are getting for the costs they pay to maintain them.
They may also wish to aquire other patents or portfolios to compliment what they own, or they may want to draft patent applications to fill in holes in thier patent coverage.
A patent map is a graphical way of understanding the complexities of the coverage provided by a patent portfolio. Studying where the patents of competitors lie in a patent space may give clues to their strategies for new products. But a portfolio is not needed for a map. A patent exists in a sea of similar technologies. A patent map seeded by a single patent can help identify where other opportunities for invention might lie for improvements or flag threats from competitors
What's the Strategic Opportunity Cube Do?
The Strategic Opportunity Cube, maps any number of patents against a set of client selected parameters and stores them in a database which
is very easily probed using a Pivot Table
What do you get?
A database containing the patent portfolio and surrounding patents which may be important, easily accessed for planning and litigation purposes. Packaged with the database are the tools to access it and try out various scenarios and answer What If? questions.
What's the Value?
Buy patent protection only where its needed. Find out what your competitors patents tell you about their future plans

Details
The Strategic Opportunity Cube™
is a way of revealing relationships and storing information in a
way that makes it possible to do strategic thinking.
The cube is not a search engine. It is a way of addressing a database
taxonomically. It allows the user to organize information obtained
elsewhere so that is easily accessible in an understandable way
and reveals unseen relationships between information stored in the
database.
The cube was invented as a patent mapping tool by Tom Szumla while
at a Fortune 500 company. Tom was given a problem of mapping hundreds
of patents and he explored all the then available techniques. He
consulted the company’s patent mapping department, reviewed
the offerings of outside vendors, nothing would do the job.
The cube has since been improved and adapted by BML to a variety
of purposes besides patent mapping including: Competitive
intelligence, Technology transfer and Marketing
target identification.
